Humanity has been battling temptation for quite some time and the war is daily one. We have choices to make each day that can make us or break us, but God is Faithful. God’s faithfulness is the key to overcoming temptation. How do we know God is Faithful, it’s through His Word. Do we have faith in the promises of God. Jesus fought Satan with the Word of God. Temptation is just a moment in time, and we might be bombarded with all different kinds of bad choices (sin) but God is faithful, He always provides a better choice and away to escape.
Praying through Temptation with scripture:
1. There’s power in God’s word to battle temptation, consume the bread of life or temptation will consume you. Put God’s word in your heart before you are even tempted, so that you have it when you need it most.
“Your word I have hidden in my heart, that I might not sin against You.” Psalm 119:11.
“Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.” Ephesians 6:10-11.
“How can a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed according to Your word.” Psalm 119:9.
Prayer: God there’s power in your word, please as I read it may it be the source of power when I’m tempted, help my heart to be grounded in your word. Lord I thank you for the full Armor of God, the devil has no chance when I'm standing in your power and might. God please cleanse my ways, empower me by your Spirit to listen and obey to your Words.
2. There’s power in Holy Spirit to resist temptations, the Spirit is here to help us with the battle with our flesh.
“I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish.” Galatians 5:16-17.
“Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.” Matthew 26:41 41
Prayer: God thank you for your Holy Spirit power to help me with my weak flesh. Jesus says my flesh is weak but your Spirit is willing. Holy Spirit fill me with your fruit that when temptation comes my way, there will be a strong battle against temptation that my flesh will lose this battle and I won’t fall into sin.
3. Love Jesus more than your flesh
“Yet indeed I also count all things loss for the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them as rubbish, that I may gain Christ.” Philippians 3:8.
“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled.” Matthew 5:6.
Prayer: Jesus I love you, I look at the world and all that it has to offer and I dump it in the rubbish. My prayer is that I might know Christ more and more and that this knowledge will transform my heart’s desires and the world will looses its’ grip on me. Lord I thank you that you will fill me with good things as I hunger and thirst after righteousness.
4. Stay close to Jesus and His power with get us through.
"3 His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. 4 Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature, having escaped the corruption in the world caused by evil desires." 2 Peter 1:3
“… For in that He Himself has suffered, being tempted, He is able to aid those who are tempted.” Hebrews 2:14-18.
“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Philippians 4:13.
“Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” Hebrews 4:16.
Prayer: Jesus I thank you for your power, I claim it! You have given us everything we need for a godly life and to escape the corruption in this world and the corruption in my heart. Jesus I thank you for suffering for us, I thank you for experiencing what it’s like to be human and being acquainted with temptation. I ask that you send me aid when I’m tempted, that through your power I can do all things. I thank you for your grace and mercy when I fall and the power to get up again and to trive again.
